Price Surge of ¥50,000/Ton! 119 Chemical Products Rise Collectively, 2026 “Price Wave” Begins

Summary:

A Broad-Based Price Surge is Underway in 2026

The Chinese chemical and commodity markets have entered 2026 with a powerful wave of price increases. Since the beginning of the year, the prices of bulk commodities have surged across the board. This trend is particularly evident in the chemical sector, where 119 different chemical products reported month-over-month price increases in January, with 44 of them rising by more than 5%. The driving forces behind this inflation are multifaceted, including supply contraction, stringent environmental controls, strong cost pass-through effects, and recovering demand expectations.

Key Products Leading the Surge: From Dyes to Metals

  1. Dye Intermediates Spark a Chain Reaction: The most dramatic increase is seen in the reduction intermediate (“还原物”), a key raw material for dyes. Its price skyrocketed from around ¥20,000/ton on Jan 20, 2026, to approximately ¥70,000/ton by Feb 9, marking a staggering 350% surge in just 20 days. This has forced major domestic dye manufacturers (Zhejiang Longsheng, Runtu, and Flariant) to implement price hikes. For instance, the price of disperse black dyes has seen a cumulative increase of up to ¥5,000/ton.
  2. Other Major Gainers:
    • Bromine: Prices have soared from ¥22,000/ton to ¥42,500/ton, a rise exceeding 93%.
    • Tungsten Products: Prices are soaring across the tungsten chain. Tungsten powder surged by ¥50,000/ton in a single day on Feb 9. From the beginning of the year, products like 65% scheelite concentrate and Ammonium Paratungstate (APT) have risen by over 45%, with 65% wolframite concentrate reporting a staggering year-over-year increase of 254.75%.
    • Aluminum Hits a Record High: The Shanghai aluminum futures main contract price broke through the ¥25,000/ton barrier on Jan 13, 2026, setting a new all-time high. From early December 2025, prices have risen by nearly 8%.
    • Sulfur Prices Triple: Domestic sulfur prices have reached a three-year high, with current levels marking a more than 250% increase from the 2025 low.
    • Lithium Salts Top the Charts: In the chemical sector, Lithium Hydroxide (up 43.92%), Battery-Grade Lithium Hydroxide (up 40.96%), and Industrial-Grade Lithium Carbonate (up 26.46%) led the January gains.

3. Widespread Increases Across Sectors

The price surge is not isolated. Significant increases are also reported for products like PVDF (tight supply, some producers halting new quotes), Urea (international prices firming), Copper, and the entire Rubber & Plastics sector. In January, 15 products in this sector rose, with Butadiene Rubber (BR), Styrene-Butadiene Rubber (SBR), and ABS leading with increases over 13%.

Outlook and Challenges

The document concludes that with national policies aiming to foster a reasonable recovery in price levels in 2026, rising commodity prices may become the mainstream trend. This presents a significant challenge for chemical companies: managing the substantial increase in operational costs will be their primary difficulty in the coming period.
