Frequently Asked Questions List
Introduction
3-Methylaniline (m-toluidine) is a colorless liquid that turns yellow or reddish-brown in air or under light. It has a relative density of 0.989, a melting point of -43.6℃, and a boiling point of 203–204℃. It is slightly soluble in water, but soluble in ethanol and ether. It can volatilize with water vapor and is produced by the reduction reaction of m-nitrotoluene. 3-Methylaniline is mainly used as an intermediate in pharmaceutical synthesis.

application
Toluidine is one of the simplest aromatic amines and a widely used intermediate in organic synthesis, primarily used in dyes, pesticides, and pharmaceuticals. Currently, domestic production mainly involves hydrogenation of methylaniline using nitrotoluene as a raw material, ethanol or methanol as a solvent, and Ni as a catalyst.preparation
Weighed m-nitrotoluene and nano-catalyst were added to a high-pressure reactor. The reactor was purged three times with nitrogen (purging pressure 0.3 MPa), and stirring was started. The pressure reducing valve and regulating valve of the hydrogen cylinder were opened to control the hydrogen pressure. An appropriate amount of hydrogen was introduced into the high-pressure reactor, and the temperature was raised to the set temperature. Stirring continued while hydrogen was introduced into the reactor, and cooling water was introduced to remove the heat of reaction and maintain a stable reaction temperature. When the pressure in the reactor began to rise, the hydrogen and cooling water were stopped, and stirring and heating continued to maintain the reaction temperature for 0.5 hours. Stirring was stopped, the catalyst and reaction liquid were separated, and 30% (by mass) of the reaction liquid was taken out under suitable conditions, weighed, and 3-methylaniline was obtained and its main content was analyzed. The preparation of 3-methylaniline by hydrogenation of nitrotoluene using methylaniline as a solvent and catalytic hydrogenation of nitrotoluene with nano-catalyst is feasible. The catalyst and solvent can be recycled, the process is safe and environmentally friendly, and has low cost and low energy consumption. The optimal process parameters are: a nitrotoluene to methylaniline ratio of 4:10 (mass ratio), a nanocatalyst dosage of 10% of the nitrotoluene dosage, a reaction temperature of 100–120℃, an H2 pressure of 1.20–1.40 MPa, and a stirring rate of 1500 r/min. Under these reaction conditions, the conversion rate of nitrotoluene reaches over 88.5%, and the selectivity of methylaniline reaches 100%.Synthesis method
Using nickel as a catalyst, the hydrogenation of m-nitrotoluene to produce m-toluidine was catalyzed in industrial methanol solvent. Through single-factor investigation and orthogonal experiments, using 80g of m-nitrotoluene as a baseline, and under fixed conditions of 200mL of industrial methanol solvent, the optimal reaction conditions were obtained: 2.0g catalyst, 6h reaction time, 90℃ reaction temperature, and 1.6MPa reaction pressure. Under these conditions, the m-toluidine content was 99.79%, with a light component content of 0.11% and a heavy component content of 0.10%.
